Teeth Extractions in Carlton OR
At Carlton Dental, the dental practice of Dr. Leif Gambee, we strive to preserve all of your natural teeth whenever possible. Occasionally, however, removing a tooth is the best way to prevent the spread of disease or stop a diseased tooth from causing pain or infection.
Reasons to Remove a Tooth
Extracting a tooth is never a decision we take lightly, and we reserve this procedure for when all other options have been ruled out.
- Broken tooth split down the middle
- A failed root canal procedure
- Tooth broken off at the gumline
- Severe infection
- Orthodontic extractions
- Problematic wisdom teeth
If you feel you need or want a tooth extracted, we recommend arranging an appointment at our Carlton, OR dental office. Dr. Gambee will outline all of your options and help you decide what is best.
Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Some people develop four wisdom teeth, also called third molars, while other people develop only two or even none. Because the modern diet has eliminated the need for third molars, the jaw may not be able to accommodate these large back teeth, and they can put pressure on adjacent teeth or cause overcrowding.
Wisdom teeth may also become impacted, which means they are unable to erupt correctly through the gums because they are growing in at an angle or are inhibited by the crown of the second molar.
At Carlton Dental, we provide wisdom teeth evaluations for patients in their teens and early twenties. Using a panoramic x-ray, we can determine the position of the molars and estimate the likelihood of them becoming problematic.
If they cause problems, we can arrange to remove them to protect the smile.
Some patients might prefer to keep their wisdom teeth. It is important to remember that they are more likely to develop decay and infection because of their location at the very back of the mouth and how difficult they are to keep clean.
Recovering after Having Extractions
Because Dr. Gambee is experienced when it comes to removing teeth, you will likely face only mild discomfort, swelling, and slight bruising, which you can manage with an approved over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain reliever.
We will also arrange a follow-up visit to monitor healing and to make suggestions for tooth replacement options when appropriate.
